Whole School Approach to Emotional and Mental Well-Being

My name is Shaun O'Connell and I am the person responsible for Well-being at Colcot Primary School. 

At our school we put the well-being of pupils, parents and staff at the forefront of everything that we do.

Meet the Well-being Team

Here is the Well-being Team. We meet to discuss the well-being of pupils, families and staff. Should you have any concerns about your child's well-being or your own, please see a member of the team for advice and support. 

Pupil Well-being

How we support our children’s well-being at Colcot:

  • We teach children about their Rights through the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)​
  • Pupil Voice – we ask our children for feedback and act on it though our Senedd, Eco-Committee, Rights Respecters, Digital Champions and Criw Cymraeg​
  • We Meet & Greet at the gates for a positive start to the day​
  • We provide nurture breakfasts​
  • Staff are trained to be emotionally available adults in all parts of the school​
  • SELFIE/Motional Well-being assessments are carried out, pupils supported and progress tracked.​
  • Attendance/Punctuality Support-we need our children in school and on time every day​
  • We use a Restorative Approach to dealing with conflict
  • Well-being interventions such as ELSA, Nurture and Motional Activities
  • Break out rooms and chill out zones so children have time to regulate their emotions
  • ELSA sessions for pupils who need support with their emotions
  • The Jigsaw whole school programme of study to support each child’s Personal, Social and Health Educational development.
  • 1:1 parent and child sessions
  • Welfare visits
  • Focussed school assemblies which focus on character strengths
  • Real PE which supports each child’s physical and emotional development
  • Music and art sessions for all pupils to foster creativity and wellness.
  • Sporting and cultural activities 

Parent Well-being

This is Mrs Kayani. She is our school’s Family Engager. You will often see her at the school gates and at the Captain’s Cabin on Thursday mornings.​​ A large part of her job is to support parents and families. 

How we support our Parents’ Well-being at Colcot

  • We have a Family Engager (Mrs Kayani) who is here to help you.​
  • We have a welcoming Meet & Greet each morning at the school gates.​
  • We use a Restorative Approach to managing conflict.​
  • We host Adult Learning courses at our school and have strong links withPalmerston and Barry College-please get in touch with Mrs Kayani if youwould like to find out more.​
  • We have a Flourishing Families parent group who work closely with MrsKayani.​
  • We have a parent governor (Carys Turner) on the Whole School Well-beingTeam representing the views of parents.​
  • We offer a free counselling service to parents – if you are struggling with your mental health please see Mrs Kayani or Mr O’Connell.
  • We provide punctuality and attendance support to families.
  • We hold weekly coffee mornings at Captain’s Cabin.
  • We invite community support groups to our weekly Cabin sessions such asthe Vale POD advisors who help with benefit applications and mentalhealth & well-being.
  • We have also had Neighbourhood Manager visit and the School Nursecome to speak to parents at the cabin.
  • We have the Families First group on site every fortnight to support ourfamilies. 
  • We have a Well-being team which looks at your feedback and plans well-being improvements at our school.
  • We work closely with our cluster school colleagues to plan well-being support for pupils and families through the Pencoedtre Learning Community.

Staff Well-being

How we support Staff Well-being at Colcot

  • We have a designated member of staff and a team to supportcolleagues well-being. ​
  • We have well-being meetings for staff in their phases.​
  • Staff have access to supervision and counselling services should theyneed it.​
  • Staff have access to materials on the Staff Well-being board tosupport them.​
  • The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) regularly discuss staff well-being.​
  • The Governing Body are made fully aware of how we support well-being at school
  • SLT ask staff for ideas and feedback regarding their well-being.
  • School promotes positive relationships across the school.
  • Staff have opportunities to talk about their emotional and mentalwell being
  • Staff have the opportunity to take regulation breaks should they beneeded
  • Education Psychology Service and Engagement Team training and support
  • Staff understand where to go for help.
